The little brother of Kilimanjaro in the heart of Arusha National Park

Mount Meru is the third-highest mountain in Tanzania at 4566 meters, only the Kibo and the Mawenzi (the highest peaks of the Kilimanjaro massif) rise further into the sky. The mountain was formed by volcanic activity in the East African Rift Valley. About 250,000 years ago, the entire eastern flank of the volcano was blown away by a violent outburst, an impressive sight to this day.

The mountain is located in the middle of Arusha National Park, so the hike on the first day has a special charm. In the lowlands of the mountain, accompanied by a ranger, you will see baboons, buffaloes, giraffes and other wildlife. The ascent leads through various vegetation zones, from the grassland into the rainforest, and through the heath and moorland into the alpine desert. A great mountain, which stands unjustifiably in the shadow of Kilimanjaro.

The Meru is technically more difficult than Kilimanjaro and requires good condition - the last 1000 meters are quite steep. However, climbing skills are not required.

The mountain is also used by many to acclimatize for the Kilimanjaro ascent - this combination is also possible with us on request. The Mount Meru climb is recommended by us as a 4 day tour. For experienced and very fit mountain hikers with high altitude experience, the tour is also suitable in 3 days. The third day of the shortened tour walks after the summit directly to the Momella Gate. Overnight stays are in simple wooden huts.

Trek Itinerary:

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
Hiking Duration: 5–7 hours
Elevation: ~1,500m to 2,500m

After an early breakfast at your hotel, we’ll drive you to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, the starting point of your Mount Meru trek. While porters organize your gear, you and your guide will register with TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks Authority).

Today’s hike is truly special, along the scenic trail, you'll have the chance to spot giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and even elephants. Due to the presence of wildlife, an armed park ranger will accompany your group for safety.

You'll pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a stunning waterfall at the base of Mount Meru before reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,500m), where you’ll enjoy a warm dinner and well-deserved rest. Don’t miss the gorgeous sunset views from camp!

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
Hiking Duration: 3–5 hours
Elevation: 2,500m to 3,570m

Following a hearty breakfast, you’ll ascend a steeper trail that leads through lush forests and along the ridge toward Saddle Hut. The route offers incredible views of Mount Meru’s crater, Ash Cone, and the surrounding landscape. Wildlife sightings are still possible along this scenic trail.

Upon arrival at Saddle Hut (3,570m), you’ll rest and refuel before taking an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). This short hike helps your body adjust to the altitude and rewards you with panoramic views. Dinner will be served early so you can get a good night’s sleep in preparation for your midnight summit push. Lights out by 7:00 PM!

Day 3: Saddle Hut – Mount Meru Summit – Momella Gate – Moshi/Arusha
Hiking Duration: 12–14 hours
Elevation: 3,570m to 4,565m (summit) and descent to ~1,500m

Your summit day begins before dawn. You’ll wake at 12:30 AM for tea and biscuits before beginning your ascent at around 1:30 AM under the stars.

The trail leads steeply up to Rhino Point (3,800m), then to Cobra Point (4,350m), and finally along a rocky ridge between the crater walls to the summit of Mount Meru (4,565m). You’ll arrive just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the Ash Cone below.

After taking in the stunning views and celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest and lunch, then continue all the way down to Momella Gate. From there, we’ll transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
